What is a Muhurta?

muhurta is a specific auspicious time calculated for the start of a new and important activity which is expected to have a long-term effect in a person’s life. The new activity could be the start of a new business/shop/office, it could be marriage or it could be the start of education for a child.

Why is a Muhurta required? (Importance of Muhurta)

Those who believe in astrology and have consulted astrologers will know that astrologers ask for some data to make horoscopes. This data is - date, time and place of birth. 'Birth' means the start of a new life. It can also mean the start of 'something new'. Making use of information about when something 'new' was started, astrologers cast the horoscope, predict future, answer questions and provide guidance. Therefore, it can be safely concluded that the date, time and place of a 'new start', are the deciding factors of when and what events will play-out in the life of the 'new entity'.

How many people can claim to have had a say in deciding the date and time of their birth?

Probably no one can make that claim. So, whether we like it or not, majority of life is pre-decided, for almost everyone, and we have no control over the deciding factors. But, this does not mean we can't make efforts to make life easier and more manageable.

Now, you may not have been able to decide the date and time of your birth, but if you get the chance, would you not want to decide the birth-time or start-time of an important activity which is going to significantly impact your future life? If yes, you have come to the right place, because we are here to help you choose the start-time for such 'big-impact' activities.

Basically, muhurta calculation is an attempt to make the management and performance of a new activity, less stressful and more manageable by consciously choosing a 'suitable' and 'auspicious' time for the start of that activity. The keywords here are - 'suitable' and 'auspicious'. By 'suitable', it is meant that the planetary position at the chosen time is supportive of a particular kind of activity and by 'auspicious' it is meant that the efforts invested in the activity started at the chosen time, will bear fruit more easily.

Muhurta Calculation Methods

Just like management, software coding, mechanical engineering and other such subjects, in astrology too, there are multiple ways to formulate a solution for a percieved problem. Muhurta calculation is exactly such a problem and it can be solved in multiple ways. After much forethought, we decided to offer to our clients, two (2) muhurta calculation methods to choose from i.e. when clients decide to engage us for getting a muhurta, they can choose which approach they want us to follow for calculating the muhurta they want.

The two methods are -

  1. The Traditional Approach - This comprises of simple and dependable conventional methods to calculate muhurtas, which aim to find the most suitable window of time within which the intentions and actions of the main stakeholders are likely to remain devoted towards their success and welfare through the new activity.
  2. The Jyotish Works Special Method - This is a method our astrologer has developed over many years, after study of horoscopes, situations and events. It is, on all occasions, at least as dependable and as effective, as a muhurta calculated through the traditional approach, and on most occasions, more impactful and rewarding.

To help you decide which method you want us to use for calculation of the muhurta you want, we have listed some of the main differentiating features of the two methods. Also, since there is a difference in the service-fee charged for the two methods, it is important that we give you a rough picture of what you will get with your chosen method.

Traditional Approach Jyotish Works Special Method
1. Good for activities which take longer than a few minutes to complete, like Grah-Pravesh pooja, (house-warming ceremony) marriage ceremony etc. 1. Ideal for situations where the new activity or a small and significant part of it can be started and completed within 4-5 minutes. E.g. Inauguration/Commencement of a new venture.
2. Ideal for people who are not very particular about following suggested muhurta times or are not known to be very punctual. 2. Ideal for people who are precise, punctual and sure of following suggested muhurta times. E.g. For people who are sure of completeing (ending) the marriage ceremony in the given 4-5 minute window.
3. Good for people who don't work with specific objectives in mind. 3. Best for people who know exactly what kind of benefits they want to draw from the new activity/venture and are able to rate the objectives in order of priority.
4. Recommended where, even though the client is punctual, but has less control of the over-all situation and there are possibilities of some uncontrollable factors not allowing adherence of the exact muhurta timing. 4. Recommended for people who are not only punctual, but also have full control of situations and environment influencing the start of the new activity and are confident of being able to adhere to the muhurta timing.
5. More suitable for people who wish to make an impact through projection of a certain image or identity through the new activity. E.g. Somebody wanting to enter a fiercely competitive market and make a name or image for himself/herself or his/her business venture. 5. More suitable for people who wish to make the management and administration of some new venture/activity easy. e.g. Owner of 3 restuarants wants to start a 4th restaurant.
6. The prime focus of this method is to infuse moral values and/or conciousness about them and respect for ethics and principles into the nature of the new entity and/or environment in which the new acitivty will be started. Since material gain is not usually the primary goal, it may or may not follow at the desired times. 6. This method is more focussed on creating a 'strong-core entity' and/or an environment conducive for the pursuit and achievement of the stakeholder/entity's goals. By 'strong-core entity' we mean something which will be geared to face harsh situations and by 'conducive environment' we mean easy gain/availability of help, support, resources, company of well-wishers and material gains.

Important To Understand - Point of Possible Conflict & Offered Advice

muhurta cannot be 'manufactured'. It can only be 'discovered'. The availability of a muhurta depends entirely on the movement and position of planets. Nobody has control over that. Sometimes clients want a muhurta at (very) short notice. This 'short-notice' period may, or may not contain a 'suitable' and 'auspicious' muhurta or 'shubh muhurta' for the activity they wish to start. The only way to find out, is to calculate and analyze planetary positions within this 'short-notice' period. Calculation and analysis will require investment of time and effort. This investment warrants monetary compensation. But, if the entire calculation and analysis exercise proves to be futile due to non-availability of a suitable muhurta (within the specified time), the demand for monetary compensation will seem unjustified.

To avoid situations where investment of time and effort by both, the client (you) and the service provider (us), produces a 'zero' result, we suggest that clients engage us for muhurta calculation in the initial/earliest stages of planning, so that there is a large enough ‘time-horizon’ available to search the muhurta in. In simple words, this means we would ideally like to look for muhurtas within a time-period that is long enough to definitely reveal a 'suitable' and 'auspicious' muhurta for the planned event.

How long is this ‘large-enough-time-horizon’ which is most likely to reveal a suitable and auspicious muhurta for the new activity?

Ideally, we think one (1) month is the MINIMUM time that the client should give us to look for a ‘suitable and auspicious’ muhurta. We will however, appreciate it MORE if the client can give us between 3-6 months to search for a muhurta that we think is ideal for their new activity or event,  and meets the lofty standards that we at JyotishWorks.com set for ourselves, and aspire to meet in our effort to deliver to our clients, services and solutions that are indisputably the best.

Please Note – Our muhurta request forms are designed to only accept muhurta-calculation requests wherein the client gives us a minimum of one (1) month to find the muhurta they want.

What if no suitable Muhurta is found in the specified time period?

While sending a request for muhurta calculation, you will have to specify a time-period within which you want us to find a suitable muhurta for the start of the new activity. If, through the method of calculation you choose, we are not able to find a good enough muhurta for you, within that specified time period, we will return 100% of your money within 5-7 days.

Some FAQs about Muhurta Calculation –

Question – Why at all is a muhurta required? If at the start of a new activity, an appropriate muhurta is not calculated and impediments or problems are faced in performing the important activity later, or if the desired objectives are not achieved, an astrologer can be consulted to suggest remedial measures (upaayas). Until a problem is faced, why worry about it?

Short Answer – A stitch in time saves nine! 'Prevention is better than Cure' is also an appropriate idiom to quote here. Sometimes there is no cure, and prevention is the only sensible choice. But to exercise it before the onset of disease, a warning is required.

Long Answer – The suggestion/idea/understanding/belief that if problems are faced in carrying out a certain task, due to (major) flaws in the muhurta horoscope, an astrologer can be consulted and remedial measures can be taken, is counter-productive/misleading and a false-assurance that things can be manipulated/managed later. People are often mislead into believing that astrologers/occultists will change something for them or make their problems disappear overnight through suggestions of wearing of gemstones, donation of specific items, use of yantras or chanting of mantras.

Remedial measures will have some impact surely, but they are more likely to bring a situation of (-5) to (-3) or (-2) i.e. they will make the problem situation more bearable. Remedial measures WILL NOT turn a (-5) situation into a (+2) situation overnight. Yantras and mantras will enable the victim to deal with problems, but the process is slow and less likely to deliver what is required in a crises situation.

People probably believe claims of remedial measures changing fortune/destiny overnight, because in the physical world, people count on lawyers/doctors/enforcers/negotiators and other such trouble-shooters, to get them out of problems, if they encounter any, while executing their plans.

A good lawyer can argue in the court and convince the judge that his client is an innocent victim. The judge is approachable and a human. Humans can be influenced and can make mistakes. However weak the case, there is a fat chance that a good lawyer will ‘handle it well’ and secure some relief for his client.

People think the astrologer/occultist is also like a lawyer, just in a different courtroom, and just like a human judge, even planets can be influenced and relief can be sought. Think about this yourself, can you argue with Saturn? Or with Mars? Can anybody? Do you think planets can be influenced like a judge can be influenced by the arguments of the lawyer? A lawyer may be able to get an adjournment on a particular day and delay the proceedings of a case wherein his client is in trouble. But who can stop Saturn’s or Jupiter’s transit? You think the astrologer can?

It is in the interest of prospective-clients to understand that an astrologer is not their lawyer in the planetary courtroom, or their body-guard who will fend-off enemies when they are attacked.

An astrologer is your advisor in the chess-game that you, knowingly or unknowingly, play with planets every day. Astrological advice is most useful only before the move is made.

Laugh if anybody tells you anything different.

Question – Why should I spend money to get a ‘muhurta’ calculated? Why can’t I use a ‘muhurta’ that I get from a ‘Panchang’/Almanac? (The panchang/almanac will cost about INR 300/- OR USD 4/-)

Short Answer – Two Reasons –

  1. Almost all Panchang muhurtas are calculated on the basis ‘Panchang’ elements only. Except the Sun and Moon, no other planetary position/combination is considered in the calculation of panchang elements. Only exception to this is – Marriage muhurta calculation.

Even Marriage muhurtas in the Panchang don’t take into account the birth constellations of the would-be bride and groom.

  1. All pre-calculated muhurtas listed in a panchang are good, but the panchang won’t say which one of those muhurtas will be best/better for you.

Read the ‘Long Answer’ to get answers for the following questions –

  1. What are ‘Panchang’ elements and how are they calculated?
  2. Why are other planets (apart from Sun & Moon) and their positions important while calculating muhurta?
  3. Why a Panchang muhurta may not be best/better for you?
  4. Why is the birth constellation given importance while calculating a muhurta?

Long Answer – The word ‘Panchang’ can be broken into two Hindi words – ‘Panch’ & ‘Ang

Panch’ means – Five (5)

Ang’ means – Part/portion

So, ‘Panchang’ literally means – Five parts

These five parts are –

  1. Yoga/Yog – Literal translation of the word ‘yog’ is – ‘combination’. It is used to identify all kinds of planetary combinations by astrologers, but in context of the ‘panchang’ calculation, Yogas are calculated on the basis of ‘relative’positions of the Sun and the Moon. The term ‘relative positions’ means the distance between the longitudes of the Sun and the Moon, as observed from the Earth.
  2. TithiThis is the day in the lunar-month. This is also calculated in a way similar to ‘yog’ and is based on the difference between the longitudes/positions of the Sun and the Moon.
  3. KaranThis is based on the Tithi. Each half of a tithi is a separate Karan. The duration of a tithi is ascertained first and then the duration of time for which it (tithi) operates is divided by two, to get the start and end times of the two Karans in that tithi.
  4. VaarThis means the day of the week. Each day of the week is accorded to each ‘pind-graha’/gross body considered in ‘Vaidik-Jyotish’ or predictive Vedic astrology. No calculation is required to know this. Almost everyone in the Indian sub-continent knows this.

  1. NakshatraLiteral translation of the word is ‘constellation’. This depends entirely on the position of the Moon. For most purposes, 27 nakshatras are considered. In some special situations the use of the 28thnakshatra à Avijit – meaning ‘undefeated’ is made.

So, we see that the calculation of 3 ‘Panchang’ elements, (Yog, Tithi & Karan) requires the use of positions on the Sun and the Moon, 1 (Nakshatra) requires the use of the Moon only, and 1 (Vaar) does not require the use of any live planetary data/information.

The Sun and the Moon are just 2 out of the 9 planets considered for evaluation of a Muhurta. Without doubt, they are two out of the three legs in the tripod on which any horoscope/muhurta stands, but can we afford to ignore the positions of other 7 planets while calculating a muhurta? In our experience, the answer is ‘No’.

The other seven planets are important too. But, for a generic muhurta calculation, the review and assessment of motion and position of other planets is not taken into account because that takes much effort and time and is undertaken only on special requests by learned and experienced astrologers.

Different planets signify different things and the importance of each planet varies according to the purpose for which the muhurta is required. Some examples are –

  1. While calculating a muhurta to start the education of a child, Mercury and Jupiter will have to be considered as Mercury signifies youngsters and students and Jupiter signifies teachers and learned persons.
  2. In a muhurta for starting a business related to food, Moon and Jupiter will have to be considered because Moon signifies nourishment and Jupiter signifies wealth. Both purposes of the business namely – public service and profit-making, must be served.
  3. For a marriage muhurta, Venus will become more important as it is the natural significator of marriage.
  4. For calculating the muhurta to start a military operation, the strength and position of Mars, the planet that signifies the military, has to be evaluated.

Next question was - Why a Panchang-Muhurta may not be best/better for you?

Answer –The reasons are –

  1. The Moon is not known to give good/happy/beneficial results in the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 12th 14th, 16th, 21st, 23rd, & 25th nakshatras counted from the birth nakshatra. Please note, that the keywords here are – ‘counted from’.

Example –

The ‘Guru-Pushya’ yog is a well-known auspicious combination of Moon’s transit through the Pushya nakshatra on a Thursday, which can be used to start most new activities.

Now, if the birth-nakshatra of a person is Bharini, then, for the start of most new activities, even this day, which falls on the day of a ‘Guru-Pushyayog, (one of the most desired ‘muhurtas’) will NOT be suitable because Pushya is 7th when counted from Bharini.

But, the panchang will not tell you this. It will, for most new activities suggest a day on which the ‘Guru-Pushyayog will operate without considering your birth-nakshatra.

We, however, will not suggest the Guru-Pushya-yog muhurta to our Bharini-born clients because it makes use of the 7th nakshatra from their birth-nakshatra, and should ideally not be used for starting anything new by Bharini-born people.

Only those who know the names and order, of all 27 nakshatras will be able to ascertain whether the nakshatra operating at the time of the ‘panchang-muhurta’ is good and suitable for them, or not.

  1. The Moon may occupy a favourable nakshatra but may still be in a zodiac sign that falls in the 6th, 8th or 12th sign counted from the natal Moon-sign of the muhurta seeker. Such a situation will also make the pre-calculated panchang-muhutra less suited for the said muhurta-seeker.
  1. Finally, as stated above ‘Panchang-muhurtas’ are almost always entirely based on ‘panchang-shuddhi ‘ and may or may not factor-in positions of other planets. In our opinion, the position and motion of at least the planet which signifies the activity for which muhurta is required, must be considered and used if possible.

Doing this is not possible in all situations, but whenever done, it surely helps in securing a position wherefrom the purpose of the new-activity is not easily defeated and those who hope to gain from the new activity will not be embarrassed.
