India & Pakistan – A Tale of Two Muhurtas

Seventy-five years back, after more than two centuries of ruling it, the British granted independence to India, but not before effecting a partition that created a new country – Pakistan.

Ever since that day, how and with what objectives, the date and time for granting independence to both India and Pakistan was decided, is looked at with curiosity, suspicion and disgust by astrologers. More so, if they are privy to information that British decision-makers in India consulted astrologers prior to the announcement of the date on which power was to be handed-over.

Why should you read this article?

-- To know the story behind the declaration of Indian and Pakistani independence.

-- To know the astrological reasons behind some major events in the lives of these countries.

-- To know and understand the importance of muhurta calculation.

After all their deliberations, the British decided to hand-over power to both India and Pakistan on the 14th of August, 1947.

There is no proof to support this claim, but it is said that the British decision-makers in India, consulted astrologers to work-out days on which granting independence to the two new countries, would continue to serve their interests in the Indian sub-continent. That probably was their parting shot, as per their foreign policy of the time.

Pakistan agreed on declaring independence at midnight on 14th August 1947.

The Indian decision-makers however, followed the traditional and cultural practice of consulting astrologers before starting something new. The ‘new’ in this case was a smaller and partitioned India.

Given the constraints of the situation, astrologers suggested that the declaration of independence be delayed until the late hours (post dinner time) of 14th August. Nehru and company tactfully kept the officiating British staff engaged in discussion until after the decided time and declared independence at midnight on 15th August.

What difference those twenty-four hours have made in shaping the futures of both countries can be ascertained by comparing some globally accepted parameters of development and progress.

-- Per Capita Income

-- Literacy Rate

-- Child-Mortality Rate

-- Hunger Index

-- Poverty Index

-- Debt Incurred

-- Foreign Investment

-- Export-Import Balance (BoT)

We think it will be best if readers search for periodically recorded statistics for both countries, on these, and whatever other parameters they consider worthy of comparison, to decide for themselves which country has fared better since independence.

Those who haven’t yet invested time in understanding the impact of planetary movements on earthly life, will argue that the country faring better on the progress parameters owes it to the foresight, planning, hard-work, ingenuity, gumption and perseverance of its people, and not to the chosen time of independence declaration.

Astrologers know, and will say, that all those qualities also come from the horoscope. If they are not reflected by the planetary combinations in the horoscope, whatever may happen, the entity (person/group/organization/country) will either severely lack the qualities and remain unable to access the sources of learning that can teach and help imbibe those qualities, or, will not be able to put-up a satisfactory display of those qualities, even after training/coaching is arranged.

Concentration of planets in the fourth house.

(4 planets in the 4th house)

The fourth house signifies ‘sukh’ or the happiness derived from material objects.

Concentration of planets in the third house.

(5 planets in the 3rd house)

The third house signifies ‘parakram’ or the ability to do something bigger and bolder than competitors.

When both these countries are spoken of, the first thing that comes to mind is the rivalry between them. One small and three full-scale wars, along with countless border clashes have kept the hostility alive for more than seven decades, and both countries have been forced to keep their military expenditure higher than is practical and ideal for developing countries.

What could have been achieved if instead of spending on the military, these countries had spent on infra-structure, education, health, and systems and processes that make life easier, simpler, and more enjoyable for the common-man? This question has been asked a million times by sane minds on the both sides and everyone agrees – wonders could have been worked-out in 70 years.

We being an astrology website, will tell our readers how and what has conjured the character of these entities and reason for the wars between them, through the interpretation of planetary positions in their horoscopes.

Pakistan –

  1. There are four planets in the fourth-house. What does this mean?

The fourth-house of the horoscope signifies place of residence, home and the comfort derived from material objects.  Benefic planets in the fourth-house give comforts, and malefic planets take away the comfort. In this case, the malefics are much stronger.

  1. Saturn as a malefic is an exception, it will give comfort and yet take a heavy toll for creating that comfort.
  2. The Sun being the most important and influential planet, is ill-placed in the fourth-house. This is the house where the Sun has least digbal or directional-strength. This in simple words implies, the government of Pakistan will rarely move in the right direction  and is not likely to acquire the common-sense and the freedom required to rule. (Its is a well-known fact that in Pakistan, the real control lies with the army)
  3. Venus and Mercury, the two least benefic planets will do whatever little they can, to create some comfort under the pressures created by Sun and Saturn. Thanks to Mercury and Venus, Pakistan will see some periods of investment in infra-structure and facilities which the common-man will benefit from.
  4. In horoscopes of countries, the 7th house signifies opponents/adversaries/enemies. It signifies partners too. The 10th house signifies karma or occupation/profession/action. The 4th house happens to be the 10th house from the 7th house, i.e. it, apart from showing the focus on creating comforts, also shows the actions of the adversary/opponent or partners. Therefore, a concentration of 4 planets in the 4th house shows, that the entity (in this case Pakistan) is focused on facilitating and aiding the actions of its adversaries/opponents, or its partners, by allowing them to use its land and resources. In the process, the entity derives little comfort and more displeasure, along with reduced freedom of well-wishers and curtailed ability of the elected representatives to operate independently.

  1. Conjunction of Moon and Mars in the 3rd house. The Moon represents the administration and Mars represents the military. The collusion of these planets in the 3rd house shows that the administration is controlled by, and is always more likely to side with the military, and not the people. The Moon is the most important planet in any horoscope and is often used as the alternate lagna or ascendant. Influences on the Moon, define the basic personality and character of the entity.

Mars being the planet most closely associated with Moon in Pakistan’s case, will give the military, a 'super-boss' type status, and because the 3rd house shows the interests of the entity also, it can be said this entity (Pakistan) likes to fight, because Mars is an aggressive and fiery planet.

  1. Now, let’s understand why the wars took place. Saturn and Venus are placed in the 4th house, within 1 degree of each other. This placement is called – ‘graha-yudh’ or planetary war.

(Scroll-up to Pakistan’s horoscope and see all that has been highlighted by red boxes)

Regular readers and followers of JyotishWorks.com will recall that in one of our earlier articles, we had highlighted a ‘planetary-war’ situation in Ukraine’s horoscope, and explained why Ukraine is currently involved in a war.

Same rules will apply here too. Any dasha, of a planet involved in planetary war, is very likely to bring about a war-like situation. For Pakistan, the red-flags are dashas of Saturn & Venus.

See the following table -

Saturn-Saturn

Yes

1971

Saturn-Venus

Yes, both

Yes

Pakistan’s Venus mahadasha (MD) has been running since December 2007. Venus is one of the two planets involved in the said ‘planetary war’. We don't want to  do it, so we leave it to the reader to make a list of all incidents of violence since then, the roots of which can be traced back to Pakistan, and the consequences Pakistan has had to bear for those incidents.

This article is being written in April 2023, when Pakistan’s operating dasha is Venus-Saturn. Both operating dasha-lords are involved in ‘planetary-war’. While this dasha is running, another involvement in a small-scale skirmish is not ruled-out. Some clashes have already happened on the Afghan border in February 2023. The problematic dasha is not over yet. And in our opinion, the reason why Pakistan is in a dismal state at this time, is the 'planetary-war' yoga that the current dasha lords (Saturn & Venus) are involved in. War or no war, this dasha will take its toll.

Please Note – The presence of a planetary war situation is not the only astrological reason that will make a country go to war. Wars can happen due to other reasons also. One of those ‘other reasons’ caused the war in 1947.

India –

  1. Presence of 5 planets in the 3rd house. The third-house primarily signifies ‘parakram’ or courage. It shows the ability to take initiative and the interests and hobbies that the entity has.

Having 5 planets in the 3rd house shows the focus of the entity in displaying courage, performing difficult tasks and out-doing competitors. Three out of the 5 planets (Moon, Mercury and Venus) are soft and benefic in nature. The efforts of these soft and benefic planets are not likely to deliver the kind of results one expects in difficult situations requiring a 'display of courage'. But these 3 provide support and add soft power to the other 2 planets (Sun and Saturn) which are hard malefics, and more likely to deliver the goods in situations that require a 'display of courage'.

Overall, this makes for a very strong third-house.

  1. Moon's presence in the third-house. A big difference between the two horoscopes is the company Moon has. In Pakistan's horoscope, the Moon is placed in Gemini with Mars, which signifies closeness of the administration with the military. In India's horoscope, the Moon is placed in the sign of Cancer, with 4 planets that signify (1) academicians and journalists (Literati), (2) artists and craftsmen (Glitterati), (3) the working class, and (4) the elected representatives.  As stated earlier, by looking at Moon's company in any horoscope, one can draw safe inferences as to who, or what, is more likely to influence that entity. In India's case, it becomes obvious from Moon's company, that the country being formed was going to be democratic.
(The Moon changed its sign from Gemini to Cancer at 5:40 PM on 14th August)

  2. Another reason for delaying the declaration was the desire of the astrologers to have the Moon in Pushya or Pushyami nakshatra. (Nakshatra = Constellation)  Why? Because the constellation that lies before Pushya is - Punarvasu which is not considered auspicious by a lot of astrologers. Punarvasu, is incidentally the constellation under which Lord Rama is said to have been born. And it is believed, as a result of birth in Punarvasu,  despite having a superlative horoscope, Lord Rama's early life was marked by a series of seemingly insurmountable challenges. To avoid being in situations similar to those faced by Lord Rama, that too immediately after independence, Punarvasu was avoided.
(The Moon crossed Punarvasu and entered Pushya at 10:58 PM on 14th August)

  3. Reason for choosing Taurus as the Lagna or the ascendant.

The distance between Venus and Saturn, which was less than 1 degree in Pakistan’s horoscope, has increased to more than 2 degrees in India's horoscope, thereby technically ending the planetary-war situation. The astrologers consulted by Nehru, Rajendra Prasad and others, knew, that for meeting challenges the new neighbour might present, because of its horoscope showing promise of war, courage will be required. Where does courage come from?

Ans - Strong 3rd house!!

Putting 5 planets in the 3rd house was possible only if Taurus was chosen as the Lagna

(Taurus was going to operate for 2 hours after 11:29 PM on 14th August)

So, this is the truth on how Jawahrlal Nehru and his associates, equipped with the right information provided by experienced astrolgers, steered independent India's ship clear of whirlpools and storms, that were lying in ambush to put 1/7th of the world's population in a state of permanent misery.

Now, if the reader has been able to see the cause (planetary combination) behind the effects, (war) we urge the reader to think about the following questions –

-- We can see the big astrological reason behind the wars Pakistan has been involved in, through its horoscope. Could Pakistan’s involvement in wars and war-like situations, be predicted at the time of its formation?

-- What is the estimated financial cost of the wars that Pakistan has fought in dashas of Saturn & Venus?

(The human cost is definitely incalculable)

-- Could Pakistan have saved some of that money and put it to constructive use?

-- Was it wise on India’s part to wait for 1 more day, before declaring independence, and thereby acquiring for itself, a horoscope that gives it's citizens a better experience of democracy, and it's military, a better chance of emerging victorious in conflicts?

-- What should Pakistan have done to avoid being in a situation that has given it a colossal loss of life, loss of money and loss of face?

-- How could decision-makers in Pakistan have known what NOT to do, and what exactly to do, to salvage something useful from the extremely difficult choices given by the British decision-makers?

-- Why was, 14th August, 1947 chosen as the day to grant independence to India and Pakistan?

-- Would the reader consider muhurta calculation, a worth-while exercise?

-- In the opinion of the reader, by posting this article, has JyotishWorks.com justified its reason to offer muhurta calculation as a service to its clients?
